As an upper cervical chiropractor for 29 years, I see firsthand the impact that posture has on your entire body and can be an indicator of underlying issues. It effects everything - from neck pain, back pain, and headaches. Do you find yourself at the end of the day with tight shoulders, neck pain, or brain fog? These are common signs of poor posture.
Here’s the good news: Small, intentional changes can make a huge difference and improve your spinal alignment, function, and mechanics.
Why Does Posture Matter?
Posture matters! It is a window into your overall spinal health and nervous system function. Poor posture can lead to many symptoms such as, chronic pain, low energy, headaches, digestion problems, and even breathing issues.
As an upper cervical chiropractor in Temecula, CA, I focus on the top two bones in the neck, which play a key role in the body’s ability to maintain good posture naturally.
Here are some tips you can implement today that I give my patients on a daily basis.
#1 Improve Posture At Work
Sometimes, all you have to do is make tiny adjustments throughout your day to make a difference. Check things like your monitor height, where your keyboard sits, and how you sit in your chair. Hold your phones and tablets at eye level so that you aren’t staring down at your devices.
You’ll also want to pay attention to HOW you are doing your job. You can even have a posture accountability buddy in the office.
#2 Do You Sit For a Living?
There’s a saying in our office: Sitting is the new smoking. If you sit for a living, change things up to get out of your chair throughout the day. You can use the restroom furthest away from your desk or brainstorm and use the phone while standing. Consider investing in a standing desk option for your workspace. Our patients who have implemented a standing desk have said it makes a world of a difference.
#3 Watch The Weight Of Your Purse
Prevent a heavy purse from altering your posture as you walk. Women won’t often be aware of how their purse is altering their posture because they have become so used to the alterations. Take a two week break form your big purse and only use a small, light purse that holds just the essentials to see how much better you feel.
#4 Regular Check Ups From Your Upper Cervical Chiropractor
Upper cervical chiropractic can help correct structural changes. It impacts your muscles, nervous system, and spine in a positive way so that you feel like the best version of you. Our patients often comment on how much their posture has improved and how easy it is to hold good posture now. The patients who get the best results are those who are consistent, follow the protocol, and go the extra mile to follow any tips or suggestions I give them.
#5 Your Pillow Impacts Your Posture
Sleep is one third of your life. That’s why you should do everything in your power to make sure that you are getting the best sleep possible. Aim for at least 7-8 hours a night. Sleeping on your back or side is best.
This is the time where our body regulates and rejuvenates. A terrible pillow will throw you off track and could be contributing to your poor posture. Look for a pillow that keeps your neck nice and neutral.
